First Day at SimpleBits

Posted by Meagan Fisher on August 7th, 2008

Everybody who’s ever been to An Event Apart or wanted to write the best possible markup or found themselves seeking great writing about design has probably discovered what an awesome guy Dan Cederholm is.

Working with him at SimpleBits is every bit (ha ha) as awesome as you might imagine. I could write a lot about how much I learned in one short day about starting a business, communicating with clients, deciding what projects to take on, and staying inspired. I could also gush about how in just a few hours I learned something new about typography, and picked up a great CSS tip. I suppose I might also elaborate on how refreshing I found Dan’s sense of humor, humility, and warmth, especially coming from someone as talented and respected as he is. And I suppose I could thank Dan for the great Mexican food (I seriously could eat at Edgewater Cafe every day), and all the T-Shirts, and for hiring me. But I wouldn’t want to make anybody jealous or anything. (Or make him feel uncomfortable, haha).

Since I’m not going to do an entire post relaying how happy I am to be working at SimpleBits, I thought I’d let the following video convey my excitement for me.

Moving, and Other Exciting Life News

Posted by Meagan Fisher on June 18th, 2008

Two weeks ago, Jason and I went to Boston to find a place to live there. We failed, in the sense that we didn’t find a place to live in Boston. Instead, we found an amazing home in Salem, MA, which it turns out is so much better than Boston in so many ways.

92 Bridge Street

I love the sleepy, small-town feeling of Salem. I love the gothy people and the wiccan supplies shops. I love that it has a ferry and a commuter rail that goes straight into Boston. I love that I can afford my rent there. But what I love most about Salem is the fact that it is home to so many talented web designers and developers. While we visited Salem, I had the pleasure of meeting one of them.

Dan Cederholm has been one of my top design heroes ever since my friend (and then boss of sorts) Erik Hersman introduced me to his work several years ago. When I found out that he was hiring an assistant, I pleaded with a mutual friend of ours Dan Benjamin to drop my name. Because I couldn’t think of too much better than getting to work with yet another well-respected, talented Dan in this industry. (Sidenote: Does anyone know if Dan Rubin needs, like, a friend or something?). So, Mr. Benjamin made the call / ping / email, and wheels were set in motion. (Thanks Dan B., I owe you one!)

Dan works in a great little office in downtown Salem, above a fantastic coffee shop. Getting to see the place where magic such as Foamee, Cork’d and The Markup & Style Handbook were made was very cool.

So, in just a few short weeks I will be a new resident of that beautiful witchy little town up north, and just a couple months later will be a part-time assistant, aiding Mr. Cederholm in taking over the world. And I seriously can’t wait.
